You have probably heard over and over again discussion concerning “The Antichrist.” Most of what you hear on the television, radio, and internet is false as it relates to the antichrist. Various teachings concerning the antichrist teach that the antichrist is one single person who will rise up at a future time and stand opposed to Christ, His Church, and Christianity. “Antichrist” refers to an opponent or those who oppose Jesus as the Messiah. Let’s consider what is said in scripture about this crucial subject.
First of all, the Apostle John is the only biblical writer who spoke about the antichrist, also John does not refer to antichrist as “The Antichrist.” John’s epistles (1st, 2nd, and 3rd John) were written to combat Gnosticism and also to confirm to Christians that they had the truth and were practicing the truth in Christ (EPH. 4:20-21; JN. 14:6). Gnosticism comes from the greek term “gnosis” which refers to knowledge or knowing. There were some false teachers in John’s day who claimed to have special superior knowledge, more so than what the inspired apostles possessed. The Gnostics taught that Jesus did not actually come in the flesh (2 JN.7), and that Jesus was not Christ, two fundamental doctrines that were taught by the apostles and believed to be true by first-century Christians (1 TIM. 3:16; JN. 4:25-26).
The first mention of antichrist is found in 1 JN. 2:18,22- John says that antichrist shall come and that many antichrists were already in existence (V.18), then John identifies that the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ is antichrist (V.22). The second mention of antichrist is found in 1 JN. 4:1-3, John states that many false prophets have gone out into the world and have taught that Jesus Christ did not come in the flesh. The final mentioning of antichrist by John is found in 2 JN. 7. John reiterates the fact that those who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh are deceivers and antichrist. These five verses are the only New Testament usage of antichrist specifically. Of course, there were many people and teachings that stood opposed to first -century Christianity, for example the Jews sought to kill Christ (JN. 5:17-18), a false prophet named Bar Jesus opposed Paul , Barnabas, and the preaching of the gospel (ACTS 13:6-13), on another occasion many Jews sought to kill Paul when he mentioned preaching to gentiles (ACTS 22:21-22), Judaism was attempted to be kept by many Jewish Christians (ACTS 15:1-11).
Let us keep in mind what John said about antichrist, and that many antichrists existed in his time (“they were already in the world”, 1 JN. 2:18; 4:1,3; 2 JN. 7), they denied that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, and also that Jesus was the Christ. The truth of the matter is that Jesus did come into world born of flesh and blood as God’s only begotten Son (1 JN. 1:1-3; 4:9,10,14)!!!
